Canaan Cemetery is a small country burial site located in Brodnax, VA that has memorials dating as far back as 1808. It is located at the intersection of Blackridge Rd, Airport Rd. and Canaan Church Rd. in Mecklenburg County. The cemetery was formerly associated with the Canaan United Methodist Church that operated across the road until 1989. When the church finally closed its doors, a group of local residents collaborated to form the Canaan Cemetery Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining and operating the cemetery. Of the approximate 4 acres that makes up the cemetery, 2.2 acres was deeded from Canaan United Methodist Church and 1.8 acres was deeded as a gift from John and Aurelia Cleaton of Brodnax.
Today, the association continues to operate as a non-profit organization and has 7 trustee members that volunteer their time to maintain and operate the cemetery. Their duties include selling burial spaces, grounds maintenance, site improvements, and fund raising for such activities.
The current association trustee members are:
G. Nelson Baird – Chairman
Joan Thomas – Secretary
H. Scott Wright – Treasurer
Garland W. Baird – Member
Andrew Dugger – Member
A. Earl Wright – Member
